Gillis expects to be quiet at the deadline

An article recently posted to NHL.com features an interview with Canucks GM Mike Gillis in which he states that he doesn't expect the Canucks to make any big moves before the March 4th Trading Deadline. The article was posted to the CDC forums for discussion by, Don't Toews Me Bro (who has one of the best usernames on the boards).

Some excerpts from the article:
"When we have a healthy team we have a good team we're very confident in," said Gillis, whose team is healthy now, save for an injury to rookie wing Jannik Hansen, a fourth-line guy. "If there is a major injury in the next four games (before the deadline) we have to do our best to overcome that and do what we have to do to be competitive. We're pretty happy with the group we have now and I think we're playing very well now. We're confident in our guys."
....
"The fact (Sundin) came to play for us made the biggest change in our philosophy," the GM continued. "We now have four high quality center icemen and if you include Demitra as a center icemen, we have five. It really has changed the dynamic of our team. We control the faceoff circle that much more. So, getting him has really solidified our group in my mind and has presented much less of an impetus to do a whole lot at the trade deadline."

NEON.KNEE has seen this movie before:
Same song and dance as Nonis... Ths team could definetly benefit from a rugged 3rd line pick up. A little competition for ice time is healthy.

Jaimito thinks the interview is simply gamesmanship on Gillis' part:
what he says now has no bearing on his plans. you dont tell other teams what you are looking for before the deal is done.

he will be fired if he didnt try to make the team better. like nonis and his small moves, if you dont get the job done, get out of town. at least thats how the new owner operates. Aqua didnt hire him to miss another playoffs, and has given him the money to spend up to the cap. if MG doesn't and they dont perform well, he will be blamed. spending to the cap is the minimum expectation I have of MG. you need depth for cup runs. if he can get better player via trades, then he should do it. but getting depth is the minimum, esp defense.
ANuckinCalgary agrees with Gillis to some extent:
yeah agreed.. No point ruining the team chemistry... and also agree, that if no moves come our way, its more or less the same team that went on a 8 game losing skid. But, think about it..without making any trades they are still finding ways to win..so it doesnt neccesarily depend on the players only. They changed their system and their game plan, thats whats leading them to success right now.

From The Trade Rumour Mill...

The frequently incorrect, but always entertaining annonymous hockey blogger Eklund has posted a rumour involving the Canucks on his popular rumour site, sparking some debate amongst Canucks fans on CDC.

The rumour, as posted on Eklund's site:

After last night's amazing dramatics in Toronto, it is looking more and more like Antropov could be heading to Vancouver for a prospect and a #1.
That's right, boys and girls, a prospect and a first round pick for another castaway Maple Leaf forward.

timw33, Dr. Phil, stawns, Lost_Canuck all had the same, 3 word reaction to this rumour:

dear god no

mike.h  doesn't think that picking up Antropov would be a bad move:

44 points in 59 games.. What is wrong with you people. He would be a decent addition.

Just depends on what the asking price is. If it includes Raymond we need something back our way.

timw33 then posted Antropov's career playoff statistics, which make Willie Mitchell look like Rocket Richard.

Playoffs:
Antropov 28 Games, 2 goals, 3 assists, 5 points.
Last playoff appearance: 2 assists in 13 games.

Dave Nonis Still Cheers for the Canucks

The Arrogant Worms posted the text of a Vancouver Sun Story in which former Canucks GM Dave Nonis states that he still roots for the Canucks, or at least some of the players he brought in as GM.
“We played last night and so did Vancouver,” Nonis said Friday. “When you look at the scoresheet and see guys you had a part in bringing in or keeping, it brings a smile to your face, to be honest. You want to see the players you brought in do well.

“I cheer for them because a lot of people — coaching staff, the majority of the players, every full-time scout thatI hired — are still there. They’re good people and friends of mine and you don’t ever want to wish negative things or failure on your friends. The hockey gods will turn against you if that happens.”

HSD19 kept the good feelings flowing:

Still like Nonis, he's a good guy, was upset when he was fired felt he should have been given a chance to finish it off. But its business and things weren't going to well I guess.

combover doesn't view Nonis in quite so kind a light:

too bad he was such a horrible gm that wouldn't even be in the nhl if wasn't for burkie.

However, nux4lyfe stuck up for Dave Nonis:
If Nonis' is to be judged as a bad GM or a good one, It should of been after this season in which he never got the chance.

- Made one of the greatest trades in Canucks history with Luongo
- Signed the Sedins to a extension
- Signed Willie Mitchell
- Extended Salo's contract (Notice how much more stable out D is with him)
- Did not sacrifice our future for immediate help ex: Kesler, Edler...yah the ones that are tearing it up right now...
- Acquired Taylor Pyatt ( say what you want he's in the line up & Gillis doesn't seem to be bothered with him, so what make's him any better)

And the Core of Nonis' Team still exists, Horrible GM!

Should Wandering Goalies be Fair Game?

It seems that some Canucks fans are sick and tired of watching Marty Turco's amazing puck control skills. Turco always seems to save his best for games against Vancouver, and his timely saves and assist on the game winning goal did the Canucks in on Friday night. A few times, Turco's puck handling behind his own net bordered on interference, as he seemed to obstruct Canucks' forecheckers from getting to the puck.

kacholu would like to see a rule change:

So what i think the nhl should do is, call interference when a player runs a goalie in the crease or behind the net, BUT when the goalie gets out of the crease and is not behind the line then the player should be allowed to hit the goalie as they would to any other player. This way a goalie will think twice before comming out of his net to play the puck and will be risking injury at their own expense.

Richard_Park_Rules sees it differently:
If Louie came out to play the puck while the Canucks were on the PP and someone laid a punishing, YET clean hit on Louie, and as a consequence of that play, he is out till the rest of the season, would you still want that rule to come into effect?

Stop whining. As much as I hate Turco, you have to admire his puck handling skills

Will Leafs (Tank) Nation Boo Sundin?

Tank Hankerous decided to post a few colourful anti-Sundin posts that have popped up on the Toronto Maple Leafs Message Boards this week.  It seems that some Leafs fans are still pretty bitter about Sundin's decision not to waive his no-trade clause last season.

Here's the gem from the Leafs' boards:
"I seriously cannot wait until February 21st; the day Mats Sundin comes back to Toronto. I confess that I am a tank nation member, but for that one night, I am more than willing to suspend the tank, because I really want to lay a beat down on Sundin and the Canucks. It would be nice if we could really embarrass him(something like a good old 10-0 blowout would be very heartwarming). I honestly want February 21st to be the worst night of Mats Sundin's life. As long as he is totally miserable and plays the worst game of his career, I will be a very happy person. He broke the hearts of countless blue and white faithful, so now I hope that Leafs Nation pays him back in kind. He could have retired a legend, but instead he chose to become nothing more than an insolent bald filthy lying hypocrite."
If you are confused as to what this poster meant by "Tank Nation", it refers to a group of fans that are hoping that the Leafs enter complete rebuild mode by trading away players for picks and hopefully falling to last place overall in the NHL standings, likely giving the Leafs a chance to draft John Tavares.

It seems that Canucks fans and Leafs fans are finally BOTH cheering for Leaf losses. How heartwarming!

While "Tank Nation" members may well boo Sundin next week, the true blue Leafs fans will have a hard time greeting him with anything else but applause. Whatever his reception may be, here's hoping Sundin and the Canucks make the Air Canada Center a very quiet place to play.

Johnny Canuck Fan Art Wallpaper

Couch Coach created an awesome looking Johnny Canuck wallpaper.

Asked for an artist's statement, Coach Coach had this to say:

“Hmmm what can I say? Just a quick drawing of the old Johnny Canuck logo from the WHL years, featuring current Canucks colours.  I wanted to draw him from another angle, in more of a cartoon style. Then I added some stripes and turned it into a wallpaper for all of CDC to enjoy.”

Available in 2 sizes.

The Return of the Russian Rocket?

You can likely file this one under the "most ridiculous item of the week" category, but the Russian website Soviet Sport has posted an interview with, ex-Canuck toughguy Gino Odjick where Odjick states that Pavel Bure, a longtime friend of Gino's, is still in great shape, and that if a team would offer him a contract, he could return to the NHL. Since the interview is posted in Russian, and online translation services tend to produce mixed results, it is unclear what Gino's exact wording was.

After bran007 posted this "rumour" to the boards, it provoked a bunch of interesting responses from the Canucks fan faithful:

WiDeN thinks a Bure comeback is a pipe dream, but that isn't going to stop him from dreaming....
"This is never going to happen, so I am gonna say,
ABSOLUTELY SIGN HIM MG!!!!!!

Lines are as follows:  *Pay attention AV

Demitra Sundin Bure <-------The fountain of youth
Sedin Sedin Pyatt<-----------Top of the crease Taylor, just stand there, we'll bank it off you.
Burrows Kesler Bernier<-----**ahhhh**...angels singing.
Hordichuk Johnson Hansen<-Simple, but effective. "

TOMapleLaughs seems to have it all figured out.
I read that before and it's purely Gino Odjick's opinion that Bure could return if he wanted to. There's nothing about Bure actually working towards a return at all.

While Bure coming back to play for the Canucks is about as likely as Vladimir Krutov taking up Pilates, maybe Odjick's 10 year old son "Bure Odjick" will someday play for the Canucks and lead the league in both goals and penalty minutes!

Extending the Sedins

This week, The Vancouver Sun speculated that Henrik and Daniel Sedin could command $6-7 million per season each if a long term extension could be reached. Whether or not the Sedins are worth that kind of money has been a hot topic of debate on the Team1040 all week, and it was no different on boards:

crisp said:
man, this is crazy this whole thing. It's blown up because of a throwaway line in a column today.

The Sedins haven't asked for $6-7 million. Plus, no two players can carry any team. Crosby and Malkin are two of the best forwards in the entire NHL and look at the Pens.

Plus, the Sedins have made everyone, EVERYONE, they've played with better.

Anson Carter had a career year with them, Pyatt friggin Taylor pyatt scored 23 goals with them, even Naslund had a better year last year with them than this year without

VictorHedman doesn't think very highly of the Twins crunch time performances:
Sedins are ineffective, and a big no show come playoff time.

Instead of giving that money to the soft twins, give it to Bouwmeester, Hossa. Re-sign Burrows and bring in some more hard working grinders who will score dirty goals.

particularsolution thinks that many Canucks fans don't how good they have it...
It's funny how many people are OK with letting these guys go. Who comes in to replace them? Forget secondary scoring, we'd have to look for primary scoring now as well. In the salary cap world you cannot build a winning team via free agency aquisitions. Drafting and developing from within is the key to the game. I'm sure they would be willing to resign in Vancouver slightly below their market value. I figure just below 6 would be fair.

If we want to remain a competitive team we need to keep these guys in Vancouver. For all the people calling to dip into the FA market, consider this: it took a ridiculous $10mill contract offer to lure a 38 year old Mats Sundin. You think you're going to sign the Hossa's and Gaborik's of this world for the same money the Sedins are asking for? Dream on. If we let these guys walk we may as well rebuild. Ship out Luongo and anyone else worth anything while you're at it. Get ready for 5 years of bottom feeding. Hello 1998.

1998? What happened that year? I've blocked it from my memory forever.

Grabner lights it up for Austria in 2010 Olympic Qualification Tournament

trio51 gave CDC the scoop about the results of the Olympic Qualifier tournament taking place in Hanover, Germany. Canucks prospect Michael Grabner, the youngest player on the Austrian team, led Group E in scoaring by potting 5 goals in 3 games against Slovenia, Germany, and Japan.

Unfortunately, Grabner's efforts were not enough to get Austria a spot in the 2010 Olympics, as Germany beat the Austrians 2-1 to qualify for the Vancouver games.

Gnickers87 is already salivating at the potential of the Canucks young crop of forwards:

"I wouldn't mind seeing something like

Grabner Hodgson Bernier

tried next year. Bernier adds size, a RH shot on the wing and a guy who will win the pucks in the corners. Bernier may have finishing issues, but you cannot deny that he actually uses his size and displays the tendencies needed of a Power Forward. (he works very hard in front of the net) Plus, Grabner would be the finisher so the pressure would be off Bernier...that and Hodgson can snipe as well."
